Family St. Patrick's Day - Haring Realty

What better time to have fun with your kids than a St. Patrick's Day celebration at home. Our REALTORS® share five family-friendly activities to help you observe St Patrick's Day with family.

  1. Wear, Drink, and Eat Green
Since the holiday theme is green, you can do everything green for the day with your family. As opposed to the green beer, you can get a little creative and choose green ginger ale since it's kid-friendly. You can have the entire family dress in green and add green food coloring to the day's meals to add to the festive mix. Alternatively, you can bake a green cake. Some sweet treats you can make include green cake pops, sweet green popcorn, and mint chocolate bark.

  2. Hunt for Gold in the Leprechaun Trap
Although Leprechauns aren't directly related to St. Patrick's Day, these mythical creatures play a significant role in Irish folklore. Ancient legend stories claim these tiny bearded men are mischievous and attract all things shiny, including gold. Fuel your little ones' imaginations and spike their creativity by building and designing a leprechaun trap.

If you catch one leprechaun, the story has it that he must direct you to his hidden pot of gold at the end of the trap. While it isn't guaranteed you'll catch anything, the leprechauns might leave some treats behind to amuse the kids. You could paint rocks yellow and make them serve as gold for the day to prove the little magical leprechaun indeed came by.

  3. Get Together and Make a Rainbow
Kids always enjoy scavenger hunts, and a rainbow scavenger hunt on St. Patrick's Day could be the thrill they need. First, depending on the age of your kids, ask them the colors of the rainbow and ensure they know each color. Guide them to paint the colors or print them out to serve as a guide.

After building the rainbow, send each kid on a scavenger hunt to find an object whose color matches those of the rainbow. It's a fun indoor or outdoor activity, depending on the weather.

  4. Read Irish Stories and Discuss the Culture
You can help your young ones understand the holiday's significance by reading Irish stories to them. Besides asking them to dress in green and convincing them to eat green foods during the day, giving them a lesson on St. Patrick's Day could help them understand why they are celebrating. There are age-appropriate storybooks for young ones on St. Patrick's Day.

Additionally, you can teach them about the Irish culture, discuss the country's castles, or explain how St. Patrick's Day came to be and its history. Teaching them could inspire an annual tradition they'll never forget.

  5. Plant Shamrocks and Bake Irish Bread
There is an annual tradition to give shamrock plants to friends and family as gifts during St. Patrick's Day. Shamrocks are great plants that last longer than green candy. Instead of plucking and giving, you can try something new, like planting shamrocks. Planting and caring for a plant could mold your young ones into future gardeners.

Since most holidays are celebrated with food, indulge in an Irish staple. Bake some Irish soda bread and enjoy this rustic delicacy with your family.

Although St. Patrick's Day is considered an adult holiday, it can be fun for kids too. Contact us to view Mansfield and Ashland homes for sale.
