Cooling Cost Budget

As the mercury soars in Ohio this summer, many of us will be tempted to crank up the AC. Unfortunately, our energy bills will skyrocket with it. So how do you stay comfortable and cool down those air conditioning costs? Use these ideas from our REALTORS® to cool your home more efficiently, cutting down on utility costs.

  1. Consider Your Landscape.
If your home is shaded by trees or large shrubs, you will end up with lower cooling costs. Block summer heat by planting trees to the east or west of your home.  This will help to block early and late-day sun.  If shade falls directly on your air conditioner, you can save as much as 10 percent off your bill.  Additionally, green plants help improve your air quality and amp up your home's curb appeal.

If plants aren't an option, check out a manufactured covering like an awning or a roofed patio--two attractive additions to any home.

  2. Seal Your Windows
Poorly sealed windows leak air makes your air conditioning system work harder. Caulking leaks or cracks and weather stripping your windows will prevent cool air from leaking out.

  3. Energy Efficient Appliances
Your choice of air conditioners will also affect your utility bill. Look for Energy Star certified appliances for fans and window units. For larger scale cooling, you may want to consider a highly efficient heat pump or a smart thermostat to further reduce costs. And don't forget, Ohio has many rebates available for consumers purchasing these energy efficient appliances.

  4. Seasonal Maintenance
Consider hiring a local, professional air conditioning contractor to service your system to keep it working efficiently. Air conditioners and HVAC units usually have removable filters. Make sure these are cleaned as directed to ensure your cooling costs stay low.

Clean and repair your blinds and window shades, replacing items that are broken. Window coverings can add much-needed shade that will help lower costs.

Oil and dust ceiling fans and portable fans as needed. In addition to getting a better breeze, you'll eliminate dust and pet dander that you'd like to avoid breathing--a great idea for those with allergies.

  5. Eat Out--or at Least Outdoors
Cooking on a stove top or turning on the oven can heat up your home quickly. During the hottest days of the summer, consider other methods to prepare your meals. Consider outdoor cooking and grilling. Crockpots and electric griddles throw off much less heat than other home appliances.  Summer is a great time to serve dinner-sized salads and cold pasta dishes.

  6. Beat the Heat With a Tall, Cool Drink
If you're feeling a bit too warm, drink a glass of ice water to reduce your body temperature and to prevent dehydration.

If you're searching for the perfect place to keep cool this summer, consider a home in Mansfield, Ohio.  Our team of local REALTORS® is here to help you find the right home for the right price. Contact Haring Realty today.
